“Not a single spark,” Connor says from the phone.
Rhi picks me up and hands me to Healer Daniel. He looks at me for a minute. He looks different than he normally does. He moves forward quickly and puts his lips on my mouth. He backs away and looks sad.
“She’s headed your way now, Connor.” He says. He sounds so sad. Why is he sad?
Healer Daniel starts to carry me away from Rhi. I don’t understand. I try to look over his shoulders to see Rhi, but Healer Daniel stops me from moving. I look up at him.
“Why Rhi sad?”
“Why don’t you tell me what you remember and then I will tell you why Zachariah is sad.”
“Pretty lady with not pretty eyes came in, took Rhi to see a student, and told us to try to find our magic. I found a warm, rumbly spot again, but nothing else. When I stop looking, he is yelling my name and won’t let me touch my wet shirt.”
“How long were you looking for your magic?”
“Since the door closed.”
“Alright, well, I have my suspicions about what happened, and they aren’t good, but I want to wait until I get you to Connor before I share them. How much pain are you in? I can stop and do a bit of healing if it is too bad.”
“No pain, don’t understand why Rhi sad.”
He looks down at me. “No pain, really, none?”
I try to focus hard on what I want to say. I hate how I sound when I try to get my mouth to move. It isn’t like what I sound like in my head. I try again slowly.
“I don’t hurt anywhere. The sun hurts a little, but it isn’t as bad as it was.”
It takes me a little while to get all the words out of my mouth the way I want them to sound. But Healer Daniel just nods at me as I say them.
“That was very well said Farlen. We are almost here, I am not as talented as your matches at opening doors while holding someone, I am going to set you on the ground, let me know if you feel like the room starts to spin or if you feel weak, we are going to walk the rest of the way.”
“Okay.”
He sets me on the ground. His hands stay near me and he keeps looking at my face. He opens the door and I walk through it; he stays right behind me as we walk into the small hospital. I don’t remember where we go from here, so I stop. He comes over to me and looks at my face and I smile at him. He gives me a slight smile back and goes to the door near the chairs. I follow behind him and he opens that door, too. As soon as the door opens, a warm, soft big arm picks me up.
“She just got here. I’ll let you know what Healer Daniel says.” I found Connor. He has his phone to his ear and is talking in it. He puts it in his pocket. “Sweet girl, why don’t you tell me what happened? If you don’t think you can put it into words, use your head to tell me.”
Healer Daniel looks at Connor and shakes his head. “She said that there was a pretty lady that came into the classroom and told Zachariah she needed help with another student. He went with her, but before he left, he told everyone to look in themselves for their magic. As soon as the door shut, she started looking, and all she found was her beast. She was searching the entire time he was gone, and you all know when she came out of herself.”
Connor looks at me. His eyes are big. “You said all of that?”
“She said most of it. I just filled in the rest with what everyone has told me so far. She isn’t in any pain, and she says the sun is only bothering her eyes a little, but not like they were, so I think we can hold off on the sunglasses for a little while, if the pain starts to get bad again let her wear them. Now, the woman Farlen described is a teacher here. She is an instructor in mind magic, and has strong enough mind magic to have caused this, though I don’t understand her motivation behind it if it was her.”
I look up at Connor. “Why is Rhi sad?”
“Because, sweetheart, when he left to go check on the other student, you got hurt. He feels like it is his fault because he wasn’t there to protect you.”
“I’m hurt?” I feel fine. My clothes feel sticky, but I don’t hurt anywhere. He nods his head at me and looks over to Healer Daniel.
“She had said she wasn’t in any pain, and she wasn’t acting like she was hurting so your guess is as good as mine here, it could be the pain receptors in her face are worse than we thought, or she is compartmentalizing the pain right now and will feel it later, unless you want to let me heal her?” He does the eyebrow thing too! How come all the men can do it? I want to be a man so I can do the eyebrow thing. Connor laughs again. He looks down at me and does the eyebrow thing, too! He walks me over to the bed and sets me down on it. I still don’t like this bed, it isn’t as nice as mine. Healer Daniel walks over to me and brings his hands up to my face. They start to glow again and I feel the heat of them.
The rumbly part of me starts to feel really hot. I rub it with one of my hands. I look down at it and see that my hands have lots of blood on them. I don’t understand where all the blood came from. Is that why my clothes are sticky? Healer Daniels hands stop glowing, and the hot spot in my stomach just feels warm again. He does the eyebrow thing to me again.
“What?” Connor says to him.
“I’m not sure. I have a hunch, but it’s not something I am sure of yet, so I am going to wait to share it for now. We are about anhour out from my shift ending now, since you guys are already here. Why don’t I see what I can do about her spleen? Have you guys talked about the student healers yet?”
“We haven’t really had a chance, but we were wondering if you could do another scan on her? There is a spot on her back that used to be covered in scars, but there are no scars there anymore and she can feel it when we touch her there.” Connor says, and he rubs the back of his neck.
