I nod my head and lean over, kissing her. “Hold the thought. I’ll be right back.”
I don’t give her time to reply, but make my way straight to the bathroom, being as quick as I can before I return, to find Everly lying on her back, staring at the ceiling.
“Are you okay?” I ask, walking over and climbing into bed beside her. She doesn’t reply and I lean up on one elbow, gazing down at her. “Everly?”
“I’ve just realized the time.”
I turn, checking for myself. “It’s just gone ten-thirty.”
“I know. I don’t remember the last time I went to sleep this late.”
“This is late?” And who said anything about going to sleep?
“It is when you’ve got a three-month-old baby,” she says, and I nod my head, seeing her point, as she turns over and rests her hand on my chest. “I know we said I’d demonstrate my vibrator, and use up an entire box of condoms, but River will probably wake up sometime between one and two. I’m usually asleep by ten, and I don’t…”
“Hey… it’s okay,” I say, smiling and leaning in to give her a brief kiss. “I get it.”
“You do?”
“Yeah, I do.” I fumble around the bed, finding her vibrator and the box of condoms, holding them up. “The demonstration can wait, babe. So can the condoms.”
“You’re sure you don’t mind?”
“Of course not. I mean, obviously, I’d really like to watch you, and have you tell me what you’re thinking about while you make yourself come, and then I’d love to taste you, and make love to you, and spend the night enjoying your body in every way I can, but…” She lets out a sigh and I stop talking.
“Don’t tempt me,” she whispers and I smile, dropping the vibrator back into the drawer and adding the condoms, before I close it and switch off the light, turning over to face her again.
She slides across the bed, into my arms, and I lie on my back, holding her close while she rests her head on my chest. Within seconds, she wraps her arm around my midriff, her leg coming up across mine, and I smile to myself. We used to sleep like this all the time, and I kiss the top of her head and whisper, “Thank you,” as she snuggles against me.
“Nothing to thank me for,” she says, sounding like she’s half asleep already.
And I’m not far behind her.
Chapter Thirteen
Everly
I wake to the sound of River crying. The apartment is too small to need monitors or cameras, or anything like that. Besides, my body’s tuned to the sound, although I don’t welcome it, especially when it’s still dark outside.
I glance at the clock, and let out a slight groan, when I see it’s just before two in the morning, and then I prize myself from Seth’s grasp, shifting away from him.
“Hey…” he murmurs, his voice filled with sleep. “Where are you going?” He tries to grab hold of me, and I flick on the light beside the bed, looking down at his disheveled hair, his eyes blinking against the brightness.
“To see to River.”
“Is she awake?” he asks, coming to his senses, and sitting up slightly, resting on his elbows.
“Yes. Can’t you hear her?”
He pauses for a moment, then nods his head. “I can now.”
“Unfortunately, she’s no respecter of an adult’s need for sleep.”
“Clearly.”
I turn slightly to look at him properly, my eyes drifting for a moment from his perfect face, to his divine, muscular chest, dappled with fine hairs, and I sigh, shaking my head. “This is what it’s like, I’m afraid, so you’d better get used to it.”
I go to get up, but he grabs me, pulling me back.
