“We haven’t even set a new day yet.” Since they weren’t blocking us anymore, I made my way over to the bar, Gunner by my side. Saint poured us both a glass of scotch. Gunner would play with his until he found an opportunity to throw it out.
“Just a minute,” Gunner said. “So you all came together to do what exactly? Give us a thrashing?”
“That you would have deserved,” Crowe said. “But believe it or not, to support you, even though you didn’t tell us.”
Gunner groaned. “Give it a rest, Crowe. You want us to say we’re sorry?”
“For starters.”
“All right. We’re sorry we didn’t invite you to a wedding that didn’t happen. How’s that?”
“Thanks, man.” Crowe slapped Gunner’s back. “Really appreciate the apology.”
Gunner rolled his eyes and took his drink, then thought better of it.
“How about some water, Saint?” I asked.
He brought a bottled one over and handed it to me. I inched it over to Gunner.
“Thanks.”
While he and Crowe argued, I swapped our glasses, leaving him my empty one. When I glanced up, I caught Saint watching. I froze, expecting him to comment, but he didn’t say anything.
“Have you seen Jasper this morning?” I asked him.
“Yeah, when I dropped off Dove. He had a rough night. Helped him to take care of a few things while Dove watched the baby.”
“You didn’t have to do that.”
Saint shrugged. “I don’t mind. Poor guy’s crumbling. I’ll drop by over the weekend and mow the lawn too. Give him a break.”
“I don’t know how to thank you.”
He placed his arms on the counter and gestured at the empty glass in front of Gunner. “Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re good for him.”
My cheeks grew hot as his words spread a blanket of warmth through me.
Gunner swiveled his stool toward me. “What’re you talking about?”
I shrugged. “Jasper.”
“You want us to visit him when we leave here?”
“You can drop me off. I can call a cab when I’m done.”
“Nah, I’ll stay with you.”
“All right.” I reached across the bar and placed my hand over his. “I know we postponed today’s wedding, but I really can’t wait to marry you. Let’s do it next month.”
“All right. Let’s.”
Gunner took my hand, and the love in his eyes stole my breath. As long as he kept looking at me like that, I knew our life together would be great. No matter what obstacles we had to face.
