“What?”
She cranes her head, blushing. “Didn’t you tell me you were asexual?”
“I did?” I sigh. “It’s not a half-bad idea.”
There’s a long silence between us. We’re both lost in our own thoughts.
“Don’t give up hope yet, Andy. There’s still plenty of fish in the pond.”
“I think this pond only has toads.”
She picks at a loose thread on her throw blanket. “Did I tell you I ran into the guys the other night?”
“You’ll have to be more specific.”
“The jocks.”
“Ah.” I make a face. “Bo Thomas?”
She mirrors my frown. “Unfortunately.”
“Will I never get away from that guy?”
“He’s a jerk, Andy. I’ve always thought that. Ever since Junior prom.”
“Yeah.”
“I guess it’s safe to tell you now that Tyson ruined your date, but remember how I told you I overheard the boys making fun of you that night?”
Hot shame crawls across my scalp. “Yeah?”
“Well, Tyson was one of them.”
I should be pissed, but I’m a little relieved that it wasn’t Bo.
“What was Tyson saying that night?”
“I don’t want to say.”
“Whit. Just tell me. Not knowing is worse.”
She sighs, taking my hand. “They used to call you Fraulein.”
I’m momentarily confused, then hurt. Beyond hurt. “Because of my mom?”
She tips her head. “I think that’s where the inspiration came from, but I think it has to do with…”
My face turns beet red. “My boobs?”
“They used to call you milk maid, too.”
I flop back, feeling slightly nauseous. “I take it back. Not knowing was better.”
“I’m so sorry, Andy. Those guys are assholes.”
I peer at her, wondering why she was hanging out with them if she thought that. “It’s not your fault they’re all pigs. You think Tyson’s the one who spread the story about prom?”
“Could be. You know how guys talk. Did you tell anyone else?”
