Page 86 of Bewitching Her Monsters
I’m conflicted, because I also want Osen to be alive, but not at the cost of my sweet, curvy witch’s life. Even if she never forgives me for breaking her trust, I want her to live a long and healthy life.
Yes, even if she knowingly betrayed us.
She doesn’t owe me anything.
War is war.
“The witch is still here,” Osen says. “I had to pull her soul back into her body, but the act drained my reserves.”
“Why did you save her?” Calder sounds completely perplexed.
“It appears that she was under a spell and I need vengeance.” Osen looks down at the tightly wrapped blanket around her body. “Worried she’s going to hex you?”
“Should we be?” Maxum asks in a neutral tone.
Osen jerks in my arms and closes his eyes as if fighting off a pain.
Her body goes limp.
Then Jade’s eyes open, revealing hazel-green irises.
“Jade?” I ask, wondering how much of her is aware and functional.
Osen could have fucked with her memories if he’s gaining strength, as I suspect he is.
“Arran?” She blinks even though it isn’t bright in here. She startles when she sees Maxum and Calder standing beside the couch, staring at her. “Where am I?”
“Never mind that for now, tell us what happened,” Maxum orders.
I notice he’s back in human glamour, but he still looks like an intimidating demon without horns.
My protective instincts are in full force. I pull her to my chest.
Encased like a mummy, she can’t do anything but allow me to do it.
“Back off,” I snarl at Maxum.
“I don’t understand. Did you guys kidnap me? What are you going to do to me?” she asks, her fear and confusion ring clearly. Her eyes widen when she sees Calder’s bare chest and weapons holster with the swords peeking out over his shoulders.
“Jade, listen to me,” I say softly. “You were hurt. We want to know what happened. Let’s start there.” Fortunately, neither one of my cohorts chimes in that her answers could determine her future.
What will I do? Will I fight to save her? Will I have a chance against both of them while also protecting Jade?
I don’t want to hurt them, but I won’t let her to be harmed again.
“I was working on my book. Then… I thought I heard a knock on my front door.” She scrunches up her face, forcing her memory forward.
“And?” Maxum prompts.
She blushes and averts her eyes. “I… I can’t.”
“Why not?” I ask, gently before Maxum or Calder begins to threaten her.
“I’m pretty sure I’m losing my mind, and Maxum looks like he’s going to tear me in half. He already doesn’t think much of me.”
“No matter how strange, tell us what you think happened,” I plead.
Jade bites her lip and squirms. “Can you loosen this blanket? I feel like I’m going to have a panic attack.”
