Then the male voice I used earlier speaks directly into my mind.“Who are you?”
“Excuse me?” I’ve never had someone realize I had invaded their dreams. “Who are you?”
“Answer my question, witch,”he says with a firm tone. By the way he spits out the witch nickname, it’s obvious that it isn’t meant to be cute. It sounds like a curse.
“Might as well just level up and call me a bitch, because I’m not answering you until you answer me.”
“You don’t want me rummaging through your mind. I won’t make it pleasant.”
“I’m in your dream. Not the other way around.” I wave my/his hands around at the scene.
“This is… no. This isn’t a dream. It’s a memory.”He sounds disoriented.
I feel bad invading his mind, especially if I’ve made him confused by my presence. I sweeten my attitude and suggest, “Hey, I’ll help you out if you help me. Okay?”
“I won’t betray my friends or my kind for the likes of you or your kind, witch,”he snarls.
It seems his favorite curse word iswitch.
I don’t want to keep dreaming about this irritating guy and his drama, so I try again to smooth things over.
“Listen, I don’t want to hurt anyone. As a measure of good faith, I’ll help you work out your dreams, and then we can come back to you telling me why we both know Maxum.”
“Yes…,”he says, as if he’s straining to remember.“You were spying on them.”
“I didn’t mean anything by it. They were just hot!” I grumble.
“As if the witches or ASO didn’t send you to kill them.”
“Is this part of your dream? What is your trip with Wiccans? Are you sexist?”
“Wiccans?” He sighs. “Witches, you witch!”
Well, this is lovely.
“I’m picking up some signals that you don’t like witches, and you believe I’m a witch,” I say dully.
“How else do you explain you are speaking to a spirit?”
“Because I’m dreaming that you’re dreaming you are a spirit,” I reason.
“I can’t get back into my body. So I’m dead.”
I decide this conversation thread isn’t getting us anywhere, so I surrender. “What do you want me to do? Tell me how to help you so I can end this dream and escape this nightmare!”
“Tell me who you are.”
“My name is Jade. I’m a romance author. That’s it, buddy. No top-secret dossier. No coven membership. Just Jade.”
He grunts at that.“Was it the witches or the ASO who killed me? Or are they one and the same?”
“You don’t know who allegedly killed you?”
“Was it the Witch Council? Is that why they sent you to follow my associates?”
“I don’t know any witches! And I don’t even know what ASO stands for. And when you say your associates, do you mean Maxum and his buddies?”
A shadow circles around my throat, closing in around my neck. A shadowy ghost of a figure stands in front of me.“Did you kill me?”
