“One, he is not your property, nor was he ever. Two, he is my mate, so he won’t be leaving my side. Three, if you don’t leave, I will kill you for beating my mate for years.” I growled out the last bit and Mama came over to Jules’ other side to keep him safe.
The man paid no attention to me, just stared at Jules. “You jinxed me somehow, you bitch.”
Jules growled at that, and something changed in him. He looked at his ex with coldness. “Zach, you’re drunk and high. Get the fuck out of here. You told me if I ever showed my face near you again, you’d kill me. So why the fuck are you here?”
Zach scoffed. “Jill left me. We lost the baby, and she left saying it was better this way. That she had only wanted to fuck me to torture you.”
Jules rolled his eyes. “I fail to see how this is my problem.”
Zach roared and moved to run towards us, but tripped, stood, gained his composure, and finished running at us. He didn’t get very far, as Mama stepped out in front of us and punched him in the stomach. Zach grabbed his stomach in pain, and Mama grabbed his hair and yanked his head up to look at her. “You listen here, asshole. You so much as look at my boys wrong, you’ll have me to answer to.” Mama growled, her eyes flashing to her dragons for a split second.
Mama was winding up her arm again just as Sheriff Rodes pulled up. “Heard there was an issue here.” He said, trying to hide his smile as Mama dropped Zach to the ground.
“Rodes, this man is intoxicated and threatening us. Please arrest him.” I said nonchalantly. Rodes nodded and handcuffed Zach, who was still on the ground, barely awake.
After Rodes had him in his cruiser, he gave us a nod and drove off. Jules gasped like he had been holding his breath. But when I turned to look at him, his face was contorted in pain. “Jules?”
He looked at me. “The baby is coming!”
“What! No, we have a month still.” I looked to Mama for help, but she just rubbed Jules’ back.
“The stress probably induced labor. Come along, let’s head to the clinic.” Mama said, as I scooped Julian up in my arms and carried him to the clinic three blocks away. All the while he writhed in pain in my arms.
“Ah fuck!” Julian yelled, as we walked into the clinic, Mama right behind us.
“Lay him down alpha.” I laid Jules on the bed as Mama went about cleaning herself and grabbing supplies. We were lucky enough that she was a midwife and could help with the birth. She tossed a blanket to me. “Take his pants off.” I did as I was told and laid the blanket over his lap.
Another contraction hit Jules and he grabbed my hand tight. “Okay Julian, I’m going to see how dilated you are,” Mama said, as she sat on a stool between Jules’ legs. “Oh yeah, this baby is coming soon.”
Jules squeezed my hand as another contraction came through. “Fuck!” he screamed, then looked at me, sweat on his brow and his eyes glassy. “You are never putting another child in me!” I couldn’t help it. I laughed and agreed.
“Julian, on this next contraction, you’re pushing, okay?” Julian nodded, then screamed as the contraction hit and he pushed. “That’s it, a little more! Come on, Julian!” Mama encouraged, as Jules screamed and then sighed. The baby’s cries pierced the air. “Oh my, that’s a set of lungs.” Mama laughed as she passed me my son. “Here you are dad, bouncing baby boy.” She said, then left the room.
My eyes welled with tears as I looked down at my child, our child, a perfect mix of me and Jules. I turned to look at Jules, “Hi papa,” I said, as I kissed his forehead and handed him our son. Jules also had tears in his eyes. Mama came back with a bottle.
“He’s absolutely beautiful, you two,” Mama said, as Jules started feeding our son. “What’s his name?”
“Brantley.” We replied at the same time.
Mama smiled, “Means fiery,” she laughed. “Perfect for the mix of you two.”
“I couldn’t agree more.” I said, as I kissed Jules and then our son’s forehead. Jules and I had a rough start when we first met, but now, watching him with our child, I felt at home. Knowing we would have a safe, happy life here with, hopefully, more children to come.
