Finally the lunch bell rang and the students scattered. He sat alone at his desk, an antique wooden piece Avery had picked up at a yard sale. It made him feel even more like Indiana Jones.
A knock came to the door. “Did someone order lunch?” Avery came in, their regular Adult Lunchables in her right hand.
“Oh hey, honey,” Gabe said, looking back down at the papers on his desk. “Come have a seat.”
Avery didn’t move a muscle.
After a few moments, Gabe looked up at her. “What is it? What’s wrong?’ Avery’s face fell, her breathing rapid. Gabe stood and walked towards her. “Is it your mom? Emmett? What?”
He reached her, Gabe’s arm wrapping around her back, feeling something in her left hand.
“Wait. What’s this?” Gabe asked, feeling a long plastic something, about the size of a pencil.
He looked into Avery’s eyes, her disbelieving face now smiling. She kept his gaze as she pulled the item in front of them.
It was pregnancy test.
Gabe’s eyes went wide. “What? Are you serious?” His hands covered his mouth, bouncing on his feet. “No way. No way!” He wrapped his arms around Avery and twirled her, the Adult Lunchables plastic container flying from her hand and hitting a desk, then the floor. Thankfully, the lid was still on.
They both looked over at it, then laughed. Gabe turned back toward Avery. “We’re going to have a baby?”
She nodded, tears forming in her eyes.
