I knew William and Laila went inside and never came out; there must be a reason for that. Was this the place I could get into the Lunar Realm?
A dip and a warmth followed, and I opened my eyes. My hand disappeared inside the rock, and water wrinkles flowed around my wrist, even though no liquid was in sight.
A doorway, a hidden passage?
Moving my hands around, testing if this opening was big enough for me, something grabbed me from the other side, and I was pulled through without warning.
My insides turned, the cold spread faster than ever, and a sense of peace came. A feeling I only had when I was near Joanne—home.
The sharp air made me cough; my vision spotted as harsh sunlight shone past the person who grabbed me.
“I shouldn’t have done this,” he spoke, sounding somewhat familiar, but I couldn’t place it.
“Then why did you?”
“I don’t know who to trust anymore, but I trust her.” He stepped away, and I filled in the blanks. He was talking about Joanne; that had to be it.
He trusted her, and that’s why he brought me here.
I tried to regain my focus by shielding the sun from my eyes with my hand—enough for me to follow this stranger who didn’t glance back to check if I was.
With a weakness I didn’t like, I asked for help. A thing I never did before. “Wait! Where do I have to go?” I scampered up, my balance faltering as I followed him.
His scent was one I knew, a smell that had surrounded us before. “You were watching us in that village, me and Joanne?”
“I was protecting her,” he snapped, fire showing himself on his clenched fists. I didn’t mean to anger him, I only wanted more information. Something to make sense of this all. But maybe it didn’t matter because all I wanted was to have my little bird back.
He stopped in his tracks, and I took a moment to lean against one of the trees. My body was exhausted, and my bones were ready to shatter. And it took me everything I got to stay awake.
“Shit, this was wrong,” he mumbled to himself, and he turned, the fire still danced on his skin, and he was ready to lash out.
“I’m sorry,” he said as he grabbed my arms, ready to shove me back, I think. I was waiting on the burn his touch would bring, but nothing came.
It surprised him as well, as he glared at me with shock in his eyes. The only effect his touch had was giving me strength.
The weakness I had slowly faded, the thick layer of ice that held me hostage melded away, and I smiled in triumph.
“You shouldn’t have done that.” My smile turned wicked, and Logan chuckled darkly in my mind.
“How did you do that?” He peeled his hands away, his palms imprinted on my pale skin, but it didn’t hurt. The redness expanded, and so did the strength that came with it.
“So, now, take me to my mate!”
He gulped and shook his head. But I wouldn’t take no for an answer. My hand collared his throat, and I shoved him back with full force. Our bodies leaped through the air until he was caught by another tree.
He grunted, pain edged on his features, blood dripping down his nose, and he slowly nodded. Giving me all that I needed.
“You can’t mark her, she is not yours,” he croaked, and my grip tightened. Who dares to take what is mine!
Joanne Monroe was my mate, my love, and everyone who stood between her and me would die at my hands.
The only one who could send me away, and tell me to stop was her.
“She is mine!” I roared, his hair fanned from his face, showing the veins that pulsated in his eyes, ready to burst.
Reining back my anger, I let him go. I didn’t know how big this Realm was, or how long it would take for me to find her. But it would be a lot faster if he showed me the way. It would be foolish to kill him now.
He coughed and wheezed as he struggled to breathe. “You will be her death.” His voice was broken, but it was still clear enough for me to understand his words.
