But first, I had to ask the one thing that haunted me. “Did you know?” I whispered to Laila.
Chapter twenty-two
Did you know?
Thelookonherface said enough, she knew. She knew what William was to me. But how could she even accept it, she was pregnant. What did this mean for her?
“We shouldn’t talk about it here,” she whispered, her eyes fixed on William. It would have been so much easier if I could mind link with her.
“Just give me something Laila.”
As she turned toward me, her brows were pinched together in worry and shame stormed through her eyes.
“He. Knew. Everything,” she gritted.
Not a second passed, and she continued to follow the others but the way she said those words made me shiver and wonder what more William knew.
Isaac believed Laila had it in for me, but even now it seemed she was trying to do the right thing. Maybe she didn’t have a choice. Wait, since when did I believe William was a bad guy? He wasn’t. He saved me, he stood by me, helped me where needed. He was more like a brother to me than my own brother was.
And all that, made this feel even more like a betrayal. Why didn’t he tell me, or Isaac?
I had to get out of here, out of this situation.
Hours passed, and I still hadn’t found a solution and before I could do anything Finlay signaled it was time to go.
We sneaked out, neither of us saying our goodbyes, and I was grateful for that.
“So, a witch?” I asked, knowing he tossed that my way earlier as if I should have known why I couldn’t be marked.
“Yes, she was needed so you couldn’t be claimed by another.”
“But why didn’t William claim me when he met me? Why wait all these years?”
His strides slowed and his brows knitted as if I said something he didn’t know.
“Is it true about Isaac?” I pressed, when he didn’t answer my other questions.
With a clenched jaw, “yes. I heard about the attack, he couldn’t have survived that.”
I huffed, coming to a stop. “You have no idea what he is capable of.”
“I do. We all do. We might not have been here when he tore this Realm apart, but the history books said enough, the scars in the ground said enough. He’s a monster!”
“He is not the same person. He doesn’t remember his past lives, neither do I!”
“You will, and then you will hate Isaac for what he has done. He might not be the same person, but he has the same soul. He did those things, you can’t deny that!” Anger rolled off him in waves, the rim of his eyes turning a bright red, and I inched back.
“Now walk, or I will toss you over my shoulder!” he spat, pointing to where he was going, forcing me to take the lead.
“Will you stand by my brother, or by what is the right thing to do?” I asked, hoping he would calm down a bit, enough for him to truly grasp the meaning of my words.
“I stand by the throne andwhoeversits on it.”
The corner of my lip lifted, a smile threatening to form, and I slowly nodded, letting him lead the way again.
The rest of our journey was in silence, but I realized what his words meant. There were some things he didn’t know that weren’t said to him, and it made him have doubts. Doubts if he was doing the right thing. If he was standing by the right Monroe.
I followed him through the dense forest that surrounded the castle as we headed toward the mountains.
