“Isaac, I need to figure this out for myself,” I said, angry at myself for putting him through this, because he wasn’t lying.
I didn’t even know why I wanted to do this myself. Why I didn’t tell him everything. Why I had this urge to tackle the world on my own.
I might have convinced myself I was doing this for him, taking a burden away from him. However, I don’t believe that was true.
Our life moved so fast that I needed time to adjust, needed to wrap my head around it all. I wasn’t alone anymore, I didn’t need to do it alone.
“Why are you keeping secrets from me?”
“I’m not, Isaac. I just—”
An agonizing howl filled the air, stopping me from speaking my next words.
“The Board is here,” Isaac mumbled and shifted back to Logan.
Shaking my head, I moved back. “I want to tell you!”
Logan huffed and quickly crouched in front of me, signaling to hop on.
This conversation wasn’t over yet, but somehow it felt like it was. I pushed away the hurtful thoughts and climbed on Logan’s back.
Holding onto his fur tightly while he sprinted through the forest. Worry flowed from him when another howl sounded and my anxiety rose.
Tears streamed down my face because of the harsh wind and all I could hope was that our friends were okay.
Branches whipped past me, scratching my bare arms. I whimpered when one cut my cheek and buried my face in Logan’s fur.
He did his best to keep me unharmed, but the further we went the thicker the forest became. There was no way I could arrive unscathed.
Yells made me glance up and the sight before me made me shiver.
Logan came to a halt, taking in the scene. Following his line of sight, I gulped.
William, Conner and Laila were tied to the trees, blood coated their faces.
I glided off Logan, watching as warriors accompanied by small wolves stalked closer. With a menacing growl from Logan, they edged back. Not daring to come any closer.
“What do you want?” I asked the one who stood in the center, seeming to be the one in charge.
His hair was pitch black, his body tall and lean. Not as an Alpha, but the way he carried himself showed he might be one.
“Isaac owes us,” he started, and my brows knitted.
Isaac shifted back and grabbed some shorts. Rage crashed off him and the small wolves slowly retreated.
Isaac stormed toward the man, his claws on display. His hand firmly gripped his throat, blood trickled down his skin, but he only laughed.
Whimpered followed, and my head snapped back. One of the warriors held a silver blade to Conner’s face, pressing just hard enough to draw blood.
“Isaac,” I whispered, edging closer and taking his hand.
He groaned and released his grip. “What do you want Dale?!”
“When I heard you were still alive, I knew it was time to settle our debt.” Dale rubbed his blood-stained skin and the cuts beneath it had already healed.
Isaac huffed and shook his head. “I don’t owe you anything.”
“Agree to disagree then.” Dale’s eyes drifted towards me and a teasing smile formed on his thin lips. “I will forget about everything and even stand by you if you kill Gregory.”
