“Put your legs in the stirrups and scoot down a bit.” He rolled back and moved between my legs.

My anxiety reached up again, and he slowly started the exam. Talking me through everything he was doing. He probably did it to make me feel somewhat less nervous, but it wasn’t helping.

“Is it always so quiet here?” I asked, changing the subject while the probe was pushed against my cervix.

He chuckled and shook his head. “Our people are very healthy; they never need me.” Right, he was a wolf.

The moment his laughter stopped, I followed his gaze at the screen. There was nothing for me to see, at least I wouldn’t even know what I should be looking for.

“Have you been in he—” He cleared his throat. “There are some more tests I want to do, before I—” He stopped again and removed the probe.

He rose, the chair rolling backwards with such a force that I flinched. Lifting my legs from the stirrups, I sat up.

“What is it?” I asked, fearing the worst.

Anger crashed off him in waves, and the way he ripped the gloves from his hands made me gulp.

“I’m not sure yet. We will have to do some blood tests.”

He was lying. I could see it on his face. The way the color had left, the anger, the fear. Everything.

But why?

Why not tell me?

I shook my head and took my loss. He wasn’t going to tell me, not yet at least. I was about to change again, when I remained rooted on the spot.

My throat constricted, and I quickly swallowed the lump that had formed. “What’s that?”

Doctor Shaffer tracked my gaze. “That is a stuffed animal we give to kids when they come in here.”

The wolf.

The one I was holding in my memory.

I was done. This had to be done. Now.

“I know you are a wolf, doctor. My mate is waiting outside, right now. So please tell me, why have I been here before, and why are you lying to me?”

He sighed, running his fingers through his gray hair and his eyes changed color. “Get dressed, Joanne.”

There was more than one reason why I didn’t follow her inside and the biggest one was, we were being watched ever since we stepped out of the car.

This wasn’t a normal small town. No, there was something off.

There were other creatures here. I could feel it by the way Logan stirred inside me. I tried to find a scent, anything. But it almost seemed the entire town was without a single scent.

Not even Joanne’s stuck around.

How they could do that, I didn’t know.

Witches maybe?

Joanne’s father was a wolf, and so was her brother. So why come here for your family trips? Had it something to do with that wolf in the grocery store?

Or was there more that Joanne wasn’t telling me?
