They both stood along with her.
“Oh, right,” Maggie replied with a smirk.
“Take us to it,” Sarah declared.
Duncan stared after them as they walked hurriedly toward the house. “That wasn’t obvious or anything.”
“Not at all.” Jamie laughed.
“May I?” He pointed to the chair beside her.
“Sure.”
He moved the chair closer and took a seat.
“Do you want some water?” She reached for the pitcher.
“Nah, I’m good.”
“Okay.” She lowered her hands to her lap.
“I was a little surprised to hear the news,” Duncan told her.
“More surprised than the fact that I was pregnant?” She quirked her eyebrow.
“Almost.”
“Why so surprised?”
“I don’t know. I shouldn’t have been, because I know personally how God can change someone. He changed me.”
“Yeah?”
“I used to be a bit of a partier myself.”
“You? I don’t believe it.”
“Believe it. I drank a lot and slept with a lot of girls.”
She focused intently on his lips as he spoke, which was distracting.
“I was kind of out of control.”
“What changed?”
“Nana told me to grow up.”
“Nana did?”
“My dad caught me in bed with a girl here in the house.”
Jamie’s eyes widened. “Embarrassing much?”
“To say the least.” He shook his head, remembering the humiliation. “When Nana found out, she told me to get my act together and be a better man. And it was after that when I decided to listen to God and see what He could do if I gave my life over to Him.”
“That’s good.”
“That was five years ago. No more drinking. No more girls.” His eyes met hers. “Until that night with you.”
