“Because it’s fucking shady,” I shout back at him.
“Shady?”
“Yeah. You gave them no warning, no time to get another job––”
“Because you wanted them gone,” he interrupts.
“Not like this,” I yell, anger fuelling my reaction. “I thought you would give them notice, I thought that maybe you would show a shred of fucking humanity, but I guess I was wrong.” That disappointment rushes through me again and I try to stamp it out. I shouldn’t be feeling disappointed by his actions, I know what he stands for and who he is. A crime lord with no thought for anyone but himself.
“Who exactly are you mad at here? Me or yourself?” he questions, and it catches me off guard.
“What?” I whisper.
“It seems a little dramatic that you’re so pissed about the hired help, so I’m just curious as to what is really bugging you?”
I stare at him, unsure of what to say.
Why am I so pissed off? I didn’t know those people, not really, they weren’t my friends, they didn’t do anything for me to get so annoyed about this.
So the only answer to that question is the man asking it himself. Nate. He’s the reason I’m so pissed, but I’m struggling to admit why to myself.
“Never mind, Nate,” I say as my shoulders slump and I go back to my bedroom, emotions swirling within me.
He said he wanted to break me, and I think he might just manage it because I don’t even know who the fuck I am anymore.

Nate
Her reactions confuse the hell out of me. I have no idea what to do with what just happened because until she admits that I’m under her skin, all I can do is push and push to get her to the answer that she needs. She’s scared to admit that she feels something for me, it’s plainly fucking obvious, and I haven’t even begun to show her my world yet. She may have been here for just over six months now, but I’ve only ever brought her into my working world once.
And that is what I need to do next.
I don’t plan on giving her assignments or any bollocks like that because she is my wife, not some fucking kid that wants to prove themselves to me. But what I am going to show her will be dark enough to see whether she can hack this life with me, and if she can’t then she’s going to be miserable forever because I meant it when I said I wasn’t letting her go.
She’s mine.
Only mine.
Last night was incredible. Her body, her curves, her beauty, her fucking taste… I’d like to do it all over again, but I had to see where her head was at this morning. And the answer is, I have no fucking idea because she doesn’t either.
The ringing of my mobile phone interrupts my thoughts and I pull it from my pocket, seeing that it is Stefan.
“Good morning, Stefan,” I greet him.
“You need to get down here,” he says, his voice cold and distant. Immediately my guard goes up.
“I’m on my way,” I say, but before I can hang up the phone, he speaks again.
“Don’t bring her with you.”
I chew that over for a second before asking, “Why not?”
“Because she won’t want to see this, Nate. Trust me.” He cuts the call and now I’m even more curious to know what has happened.
I move from my seat and quickly go up the stairs to tell Kat that I’m going out. She’s in her room, looking as delicious as ever in her gym gear. The way the gym shorts hug her ass and the way the vest top clings to her like a second skin has my mouth salivating, but I have business to attend to, so I don’t have time to stand here and picture all the ways in which I would stick my cock in her.
“I’m going to work, I won’t be long,” I say and all I get back is a “Mmmhmm” from her which pisses me off. I expect words, not a goddamn humming noise. I’ll deal with her later though. For now, I need to go and see what is troubling Stefan.
