“Danger or trouble? I am fine. I can do breakfast.” She answered.

“That eliminates danger as a likely scenario. Now you are in serious trouble.”

“I am fine. It’s a small swelling.”

“Apply some ice to it. I can’t, unfortunately, do breakfast anymore.”

Is he seriously doing that to her? Caroline was furious. He was the one inviting her earlier, now coldly rejecting her with the same breath. Without much of an apology. After she put herself out there… Serious trouble? Whatever!

“Hope you have a good day.” She fired away a quick message. She was wasting her time. He probably enjoyed toying with women.

“Will do. No doubt.”

Oh God! How insufferable! His true colors were shining, Caroline thought. Snobbish and entitled prick. And he had the gall to tell her she was in serious trouble. In your dreams, Caroline said out loud walking back to her kitchen to fetch ice.

She sat on her couch, her legs stretched, infuriated with herself, mad at her best friend, worried for Aly, and following Jack’s instruction of applying ice to the swelling. The touch of the frozen plastic bag relieved the pain temporarily. But she burned inside with humiliation. Why didn’t she just say no or wait to hear from him? What will she do when they meet again tonight?

Her phone beeped again. “What are you wearing this evening?” Before she could stop seething with anger, another message arrived on her phone. It was from Jack. This is borderline inappropriate. And she hated Jack Reiner for it.
